# Migrating from WordPress to HubSpot: a step-by-step plan

Edmond DemaOctober 5, 20264 min read

Moving a website from WordPress to HubSpot CMS is usually driven by the same goals: fewer plugins to maintain, less worry about security updates, and a website that works directly with the CRM your sales and marketing teams already use.

A migration done carelessly can cost you search rankings, break forms and lose content. Done in the right order, it is a predictable project. Here is the plan we follow.

## Step 1: Audit what you have

Before building anything, make a complete inventory of the current site:

- **Every URL.** Pages, blog posts, category and tag pages, landing pages and downloadable files. A crawler tool or your sitemap is the fastest way to list them.
- **What earns traffic.** Use Google Search Console and your analytics to find the pages that bring in visitors and leads. These need the most care.
- **What each plugin does.** List every plugin and the job it performs: forms, SEO settings, galleries, pop-ups, caching, analytics. Each needs a decision.
- **Forms and where their data goes.** Contact forms, quote requests, newsletter sign-ups and any automations they trigger.
- **Integrations and tracking.** Analytics, advertising pixels, chat widgets, booking tools.

## Step 2: Decide what moves

A migration is the best chance you will get to clean up. Outdated pages, thin blog posts with no traffic and duplicate content can be merged or dropped instead of rebuilt. Every page you keep has a cost to migrate and maintain, so keep the ones that earn their place.

Record each decision in a spreadsheet: old URL, action (keep, merge, drop) and new URL. That spreadsheet becomes your redirect map later.

## Step 3: Replace plugins with HubSpot features or proper builds

Much of what WordPress does through plugins, HubSpot does natively: forms, SEO fields, landing pages, pop-ups, analytics and CRM tracking. For each plugin on your list, decide whether:

- HubSpot has a built-in equivalent.
- A HubSpot integration or marketplace app covers it.
- It needs a custom module or a small piece of custom code.
- You no longer need it at all.

## Step 4: Build the theme and modules

Your WordPress theme does not transfer. The design is rebuilt in HubSpot, either on an existing theme or as a custom theme with modules designed around your content. Invest in the modules your marketing team will use most, such as hero sections, service blocks, testimonials and calls to action, so they can build new pages without a developer.

## Step 5: Move the content

Blog content can often be imported with HubSpot's import tools; check HubSpot's current documentation for the options available to your account. Imported posts still need a review: formatting, images, internal links and embedded content often need tidying.

Website pages are usually rebuilt using the new modules rather than imported, which is also a good moment to tighten the copy.

## Step 6: Rebuild forms and connect them to the CRM

Recreate each form as a HubSpot form, map the fields to CRM properties, and rebuild any notifications or follow-up workflows. Test every form end to end: submit it, check the contact appears in the CRM with the right details, and confirm the right person is notified.

## Step 7: Set up redirects

This is the step that protects your search rankings. Every old URL that changes needs a permanent (301) redirect to its new equivalent, using HubSpot's URL redirects tool. Common changes to watch for:

- WordPress blog URLs that included dates or categories.
- Category and tag archive pages.
- Uploaded files, such as PDFs, that moved to a new location.
- Pages you merged into others.

Redirect each old URL to the most relevant new page, not simply to the homepage. Your spreadsheet from step 2 makes this straightforward.

## Step 8: Carry over SEO settings

Page titles, meta descriptions, image alt text and structured data should be moved across deliberately, not left to defaults. Check that the new site has an up-to-date sitemap and that nothing important is accidentally blocked from search engines.

## Step 9: Launch carefully

- Launch at a quiet time for your business.
- Connect your domain to HubSpot and confirm HTTPS is working.
- Click through the site on desktop and mobile.
- Test every form again on the live domain.
- Check a sample of old URLs to make sure the redirects work.
- Submit the new sitemap in Google Search Console.

## Step 10: Watch for the first few weeks

Some movement in search rankings after a migration is normal. Watch Search Console for crawl errors and pages returning "not found", fix any missed redirects quickly, and compare traffic and form submissions against the old site. Keep the old WordPress site backed up for a while in case you need to check something.

## Is it worth it?

For businesses already using HubSpot's CRM, usually yes: less maintenance, stronger security by default, and a website that feeds the sales process directly. If you rely on WordPress plugins for complex functionality such as a large online shop, weigh the trade-offs carefully first. We covered those in our [comparison of HubSpot CMS and WordPress](https://www.filtedev.com/blog).

FilteDev handles WordPress to HubSpot migrations from audit to launch, including custom themes and redirect mapping. [Tell us about your current site](https://www.filtedev.com/contact) and we will outline what a migration would involve.
