# Core Web Vitals explained for business owners

If you have ever run your website through Google's PageSpeed Insights, you have seen three acronyms with coloured scores next to them: LCP, INP and CLS. Together they are Google's Core Web Vitals, and they measure something every business owner cares about: whether your website feels fast and stable to real visitors.

Here is what each one means, what counts as good, and what usually fixes a poor score, without the jargon.

## The three measurements

### LCP: how quickly the main content appears

**Largest Contentful Paint** measures how long it takes for the biggest visible element on the page, usually a hero image or main heading, to finish loading. It is the closest single number to what a visitor feels as "the page has loaded".

**Good:** 2.5 seconds or less.

### INP: how quickly the page responds

**Interaction to Next Paint** measures how long the page takes to visibly respond when someone clicks a button, taps a menu or types into a form. A page can look loaded but still feel sluggish if it is busy running code in the background. INP replaced an older metric, First Input Delay, in 2024.

**Good:** 200 milliseconds or less.

### CLS: whether things jump around

**Cumulative Layout Shift** measures unexpected movement of content while the page loads. You have experienced a bad CLS score if you have gone to tap a link and the page shifted at the last moment, so you tapped an advert instead.

**Good:** 0.1 or less.

## Why they matter

There are two reasons, and the first is more important than the second.

**Visitors.** Slow, jumpy, unresponsive pages frustrate people, and frustrated visitors leave before they read your offer or fill in your form. This is especially true on mobile connections.

**Search.** Core Web Vitals are part of the page experience signals Google considers. They are not the most important ranking factor; relevant, useful content still matters far more. But when competing pages are similar, a better experience can help, and a very poor one can hold you back.

## How to check your scores

- **PageSpeed Insights** (pagespeed.web.dev): enter any page address. The top section shows real-world data from Chrome users if your site has enough traffic. The lower section is a lab test, useful for diagnosing problems.
- **Google Search Console:** the Core Web Vitals report groups your pages into good, needs improvement and poor, based on real visitor data across your whole site.

One important detail: Google assesses these metrics using the experience of most real visitors (the 75th percentile), separately for mobile and desktop. Your own fast laptop on office Wi-Fi is not a good test. Mobile scores are usually the ones that need work.

## What usually fixes a poor score

### For a slow LCP

- Resize and compress large images, and serve modern formats such as WebP or AVIF.
- Do not lazy-load the main hero image; load it straight away.
- Reduce the number of fonts and heavy scripts that load before the page can display.
- Use good hosting with a content delivery network, so pages are served from close to your visitors.

### For a poor INP

- Remove third-party scripts you no longer use: old tracking pixels, chat widgets, pop-up tools.
- Delay non-essential scripts until after the page has loaded.
- On custom-built sites, break up long-running JavaScript so the page stays responsive.

### For a high CLS

- Give every image and video a set width and height, so space is reserved before it loads.
- Reserve space for adverts, embeds and cookie banners instead of letting them push content down.
- Load web fonts in a way that avoids text visibly jumping when the font changes.

## Where to start

Do not chase a perfect 100 in the lab test. Focus on getting your most important pages, usually the homepage, main service pages and contact page, into the "good" range for real mobile visitors. That is where the benefit to both visitors and search visibility actually comes from.

Performance is part of every FilteDev build, and we also improve existing sites. If your scores are in the red, [send us your address](https://www.filtedev.com/contact) and we will tell you what is slowing it down.
